Personal Interests

Outside of medicine, Dr. Asher’s interests include travel, languages, gardening, and fencing. She has represented the United States three times at the World Championships as a member of the US Veterans’ Fencing Team. Dr. Asher won a bronze medal in 2012 in Krems, Austria and serves on the medical committee of USA Fencing.

Biography

Dr. Valerie A. Asher grew up in Montgomery County, MD. She graduated summa cum laude from Yale College. Before returning to New Haven to attend the Yale School of Medicine in 1985, she spent two years in Hong Kong as a teaching fellow of the Yale – China Association. She completed her internship in general surgery at UMDNJ – Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, NJ, and her residency in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital. In 1995 she began practicing in Maryland, joining Drs. Hauck, Bianchi, and Driscoll P. A. in 1999.

Dr. Asher is experienced in caring for both children and adults. She practices general otolaryngology with wide interests, including pediatric otolaryngology, head and neck surgery, and thyroid surgery. She has served on both administrative and educational hospital committees and has lectured on the development of antibiotic resistance in the treatment of otitis media. Dr. Asher is a board certified Fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.
